Energy - KC Hamada
Director’s Note
There wasn’t originally going to be an MV for Energy, but @kchamadamusic and I decided last minute to do one as long as it was “low stakes,” approaching everything from concept to post-production with zero frills. The line “unmasking petty schemes” stuck with me through repeat listenings of the song, so I developed a concept of the pettiest scheme possible: a pickpocket trying to steal a wallet while planning an ATM heist.
With that dumb idea in mind, I used a small DV camera I had brought to Dubai, and sprayed a cheap giraffe mask all white as the only prop (inspired by You’re Next). KC had a small LED that I tucked under my chin for a few shots before improvising a lanyard rig that I could hang the light from. We also confused the shit out of a friendly neighbourhood restaurant with some hand POV shots and filming a shawarma.
For a take, KC punched my camera and ended up injuring the lens. I then further demolished it when I thought I could fix it, and had to resort to using our phone for a few shots. All I can really say is oops?
This was definitely the scrappiest of the five MVs I filmed in July, but I’m weirdly very proud of it. Also I love the mask.
